Cyclone AMPHAN hit West Bengal and Odisha in India

Super cyclone Amphan

Super Cyclonic storm "Amphan" made landfill at 2:30 pm on Wednesday was continue for four hours and hit between Digha in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district and Hatiya Island in Bangladesh according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

The intensity of the cyclone near its center as the landfall process started was recorded at 160-170 kmph, gusting to 190 kmph,” it is said by IMD Chief Mrutyunjay Mohopatra. And the cyclone Amphan hit Bengal and Odisha during a pandemic of Coronavirus.




 The chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee has said that Cyclone Amphan has taken 72 lives in the state. The Bengal government has announced Rs 2 lakh compensation for those who  killed and Rs 5o,ooo each to the persons who got seriously injured  in the devastation unleashed by the super cyclone. And also said that the impact of Cyclone was "worse than coronavirus" and claimed damages due to the cyclone could be in the region of Rs 1 lakh crore. Affected around 44.8 lakh people  in the state from Amphan.






41 Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in West Bengal and Odisha to deal with any emergency situation arising out of Super Cyclone Amphan.

At that time, Amphan has gone and left behind a massive trail of destruction in its wake. While  Odisha thanks to the Meteorological Department for the accurate predictions that facilitated lower than usual evacuation - southern Bengal, particularly the districts of South and North 24 Paraganas and East Midnapore were badly hit. Telecommunication system are down in several areas, electricity cut off, and thousands of dwellings, roads, bridges, and jetties lie ravaged.

Today, PM Narendra Modi announced an interim financial assistance of Rs 1,000 crore for West Bengal to aid the relief and rehabilitation efforts after conducting an aerial survey of the cyclone-hit regions with chief minister Mamata Banerjee. Today PM Modi reached  West Bengal and Odisha to take the information of the situation in the wake of Cyclone Amphan. The Prime Minister is expected to undertake an aerial survey of the state and review the aftermath.

After, CM Mamata Banerjee expressed her gratitude to President Ram Nath Kovind for personally calling her to convey support amid the crisis in the state due to cyclone Amphan.

The cyclone, which weakened into a depression on Friday, was further reduced to a well-marked low-pressure area over North Bangladesh and the neighboring area. The India Meteorological Department  had said “It is very likely to continue to move north-northeastwards and weaken further into a low-pressure area during next 12 hours”.
