India's win in UN Security Council

India as  a non permanent member of the United council


 In UN Security Council India elected as non permanent member for two years. It is a significant diplomatic victory for the country, which has long been pushing for reforms and global institution.


India will also serve as a president of powerful 15 nation UN body for the month of August 2020. The presidency of UN council transfer from one member to another in turn for one month's in the order of English alphabetical.

India secured the non-permanent seat with  184 votes out of 193 in favour at General Assembly.

This is the 8th term when India elected as non-permanent member UNSC member. Previously India elected as non-permanent member for the years 1950-51, 1967-68, 1972-73, 1977-78, 1984-85, 1991-92, and 2011-12.


The term 2021-22 term will be critical for India which has been pushing efforts to reform the Security Council and seek permanent  membership of the Council.

Supporting for India has been increasing with the number of countries advocating that the current present UNSC does not represent the Geo-political realities of the 21st century.

The Ministry of External Affairs Secretary  Vikas Swarup told reporters that enhancing counter-terrorism measures would be one of India’s main priorities”.

India would seek “streamlining” of the process of sanctions against terrorists and terror entities, adding that the process of imposing sanctions needs to be de-politicized as there is no justification for any act of terrorism, he added.


What is UN Security Council?

  • The UN Charter establishes the membership of thr Security Council.
  • There are total 193 members in the UN
  • The Security Council consists of fifteen members of United Nations, including five permanent members and ten non-permanent members.

Ireland, Mexico, Kenya, and Norway were also elected as the non-permanent member of the UNSC for two year  beginning from January 1,2021.

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted after the election on Thursday morning “Deeply grateful for the overwhelming support shown by the global community for India’s membership of the UN Security Council,”.
